01 - THE ATHLETE

Meet Them
Where They Are.
Show Them Where
They Can Go.

Every athlete's starting point is different. That's the point. The best coaching meets people where they are, with curiosity and respect, and then helps them see what's possible.

It's not about a template. It's about you - your life, your training history, your goals, and the constraints you're working with. From there, we build a program that fits, evolves and moves you forward.

Because the perfect training program for an imaginary athlete isn't particularly useful. We coach real people.

REAL PROGRESS STARTS
WITH REAL PEOPLE.

When we meet you where you are, we can coach you better, ask better questions and build a path that actually works in the real world.

We can also help you understand what is possible. And lastly, we can show you how to get there.
A good example is we coach an older athlete, 75 years old, who has some really ambitious goals. If we were to train him to see ‘how much we could give him before he breaks’ or based on protocols we use for another younger athlete with similar goals; it would be a recipe for disaster.

So, we looked at his goals, we mapped out the requirements needed to achieve those goals, and the physiology demands/limitations and strengths he has. We then came to the conclusion that ‘this is possible if we do this as X, Y, Z.” For an athlete like this, it would have been very easy for him(or us) put limits that aren't actually there or ignore limits that are there- that’s not coaching.

Sometimes the goal isn't big enough. Sometimes the goal is plenty big, but the path they're using isn't going to get them there.

That's where coaching becomes more than writing workouts.

Our job is to look at the athlete in front of us, look down the road, and connect those two points.

Here is where you are.
Here is where we think you can go.
Now let's figure out how to get there.

That path shouldn't look the same for everyone. Your goals are personal, your coaching should be too.

HAVING A SYSTEM
DOES NOT MEAN YOU
FOLLOW ALL OF THE RULES.

There are principles we believe in.
There are training axioms we come back to again and again.
And there is physiology we can't negotiate with.

But how we apply those things should change with the person.

That's coaching.

Not fitting an athlete into our system.

Understanding the athlete, applying what we know and then pushing the edges of what that athlete believes is possible.

Meet them where they are. Show them where they can go.
