It’s Not The Weight of Something, It’s The Direction…
A lot of times I think we equate struggle and everything being an ‘uphill battle. In triathlon, the image that often sticks with me when I hear people talk is that of an athlete(or Sisyphus) relentlessly pushing a rock uphill—grinding, struggling, inch by inch. It's a powerful metaphor for perseverance, but maybe it's time we flip the narrative.
At Andy Potts Racing, we like to think about it differently. What if, instead of pushing the rock up the hill, you're pushing it down? That’s the ethos behind our Give Me Five approach.
Why? Because the hardest step—whether in sport or in life—is the first one. Once you get moving, momentum builds. Confidence grows. Experience stacks. Excitement kicks in.
You go a little further, a little faster, and next time, it’s easier to get back to that place. The hill flattens, then turns into a slope, then a downhill rush. Each day you jump in the pool, it gets easier and easier to keep stacking days.
The same goes for your daily workouts. Ever notice how the first five minutes of a workout are often the toughest? That moment of hesitation before you “just get out the door”? That’s your rock, sitting at the top of the hill. Give it a push. Just five minutes. That’s all it takes to shift everything.
Don’t Look At The Mountain. Just Focus on the First Step.
So as you gear up for the final races of the season or begin planning your goals for next year, don’t dwell on the mountain ahead. Focus on the push. Start small. Build momentum. Then ride that wave.
